The Great Horned Owl is the largest owl residing all year in Ohio. They are the second most common, behind the Eastern Screech Owl. These powerful predators are near the top of the avian food chain.

Identification:  They are the only large owl in our area with prominent ear tufts. They also have large yellow eyes and a deep hooting voice.

Average Weight (female/male):  1769 grams / 1318 grams

Habitat:  Forests

Food:  Mammals

Nesting:  Tree
