Eastern Screech Owls on branches

Eastern Screech Owls are common east of the Rocky Mountains, but because of their magnificent camouflage you are more likely to hear their trilling calls before you see them. They are found wherever trees are, including urban parks, and will sometimes nest in backyard nest boxes.

Identification:  Small owls, only about 8 inches tall, with a large head and prominent ear tufts. They occur in both grey and red morphs.

Average Wingspan:  21 inches  

Average Weight (female/male):  194 grams / 167 grams

Habitat:  Forests

Food:  Small Animals

Nesting:  Cavity
